Understanding Docker Volumes and Data Persistence
Containers are ephemeral. Docker volumes ensure your data survives container restarts, updates, and disasters.
One of the most common mistakes new Docker users make is assuming data inside a container persists forever. It does not. Containers are designed to be ephemeral. When a container restarts, updates, or crashes, anything stored inside it is gone. That is where Docker volumes come in.
The Problem With Container Storage
By default, every file a container writes to its filesystem lives in a writable layer that disappears when the container is removed. This is by design: containers should be stateless and replaceable. But your database files, uploaded documents, and application configuration need to survive container restarts.
Volumes vs. Bind Mounts
Docker offers two ways to persist data outside a container. Volumes are managed by Docker and stored in a dedicated directory on the host. Bind mounts map any directory on the host into the container. For most self-hosted applications, named volumes are the better choice. They are easier to back up, portable across hosts, and work correctly with Docker Desktop and Docker Compose.
Backing Up Volumes
To back up a named volume, run a temporary container that mounts the volume and creates a compressed archive. For example, backing up a PostgreSQL volume involves stopping the database container, running a backup container that tars the volume, and transferring the archive off-site.
Best Practices
- Always use named volumes in docker-compose.yml instead of anonymous volumes
- Never store state inside a container that is not backed by a volume
- Use separate volumes for database data, application uploads, and configuration
- Automate volume backups as part of your nightly backup routine
VPS1 handles Docker volume configuration, backup automation, and disaster recovery for all managed deployments.
